Car Wash will be held across the U.S. and Canada on Saturday, June 11, 2011 as a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis in Canada and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, as well as some local market charities. More than 140 CARSTAR stores throughout both countries are expected to participate in the one-day event. Tickets are being sold at participating CARSTAR stores for $10, with 100 percent of the ticket purchase benefiting the selected charities.

On May 14th 2004 the new Bankruptcy Legislation Amendment (anti-avoidance and other measures) Bill was introduced. The purpose of this bill was to curtail the unfair way in which some high income earners were using bankruptcy laws as a way of avoiding their tax payments. Even though the number of affluent people who try to use bankruptcy as an excuse is small, their share still amounts up to a significant sum. These people have the ability to pay their taxes but by filing for bankruptcy they are able to avoid their tax obligations.
Despite the good intensions with which this bill has been introduced, some people are worried that though this bill was initiated to curb tax avoidance by those who can afford it but it might also adversely influence other people who actually need the advantages of filing for bankruptcy to solve their serious financial problems.
The bill came into effect quickly after it was introduced in May 2004. On May 21st 2004 the Chairman of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Bronwyn Bishop made it known to the media that the committee is examining changes to bankruptcy laws. On the 18th of June, 2004 the ICAA expressed its support for the legislation, however they also voiced their concern about the effect that this new law would have on the individuals who genuinely were in financial trouble and were not using bankruptcy as a technique of tax evasion. By the 7th of December 2005 the Bankruptcy Legislation Amendment (Anti-Avoidance) Bill 2005 was introduced into parliament.
The bill has been effective from October 17, 2005 and with this bill it would be more difficult for people to make a fresh start with their finances by filing for bankruptcy. Since the law has come into effect, filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy will be considerably changed. Unlike earlier, a means test will be conducted in order to evaluate if you quality for Chapter 7 or not. In addition to that you will also have to attend, and pay for, debt counseling which is mandatory and will be considered as part of the criterion for determining your qualification. At the same time, if it so happens that you do not qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, then you can still file for bankruptcy under Chapter 13, even though it is a much more complicated process.

HOPEDALE -- Residents and town employees can once again grab a bite to eat and cup of coffee in Town Hall thanks to the recent opening of the restaurant The Town Common inside.

The new establishment, owned by residents Edward and Sandra Holland, opened its doors a week ago, replacing Rebecca's Place at 76 Hopedale St.

"It's nice to have a first-class operation back in Town Hall," said Town Coordinator Daniel Keyes.

The new restaurant offers patrons an array of breakfast and lunch items, including everything from omelets for between $3.25 and $4.95 to club sandwiches, which run between $4.25 and $5.25.

"It's your basic, traditional breakfast and lunch items," said Edward Holland, a 39-year-old Hopedale native.

In addition to running the business, Holland is the restaurant's only cook, supported by two full-time waitresses, two part-time waitresses and a bus person.

Holland said he has always wanted to run his own restaurant, having worked as a cook for area eateries for about 25 years.

"I've done it for everyone else. I thought it was time to take a chance and try it for myself," he said.

Holland and his wife bought the previous business, Rebecca's, at the end of May and signed a three-year lease with the town for the space in June.

"It's been a family event to get things going," Holland said.

Holland's sister Erin Halpin, who owns Artist Touch, a interior design company in Milford, painted the inside of the restaurant dark green. She also designed the sign in the restaurant's window and the menu.

In addition, Sandra Holland, an accountant by trade, does all of the bookkeeping work for the restaurant.

Holland said he is optimistic his restaurant will be successful. Being located in Town Hall, the restaurant has a "captive crowd," he said. Town Hall workers, he said, can swing in and easily grab something to eat.

"It's convenient to have me here," said Holland, father of 4-year-old Jennifer.

In addition, Holland said he hopes to draw more patrons from the nearby schools, once they open in the fall.

Town officials, including Keyes and assessor Eugene Phillips, have already become regulars at The Town Common.

"For me, it's convenient and I enjoy having a local, hometown grown boy running it," said Phillips, who was disappointed when Rebecca's Place closed. "I'm happy to see the restaurant reopen."

The Town Common is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and serves breakfast Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to noon.

Phillips said he gets coffee at the restaurant in the morning and a grilled chicken salad in the afternoon, all at "very reasonable prices."

Keyes said he is now able to grab lunch, such as a salad with tuna, in 15 minutes.

"The food is excellent. The service is excellent," he said.

While some have argued a restaurant in the middle of town offices blocks access, Phillips said he thinks it belongs in Town Hall.

"It's part of our history. It's part of our heritage," he said.

Holland said he hopes his restaurant becomes a main-stay in town.

"I hope to be here long enough to see my daughter get out of school at the high school...," he said, peering out the restaurant's front window at Hopedale Junior Senior High School. "That's like 10 years away. She's only 4 1/2 now."

Our December Mystery Photo shows the F.A. Gould Harware Building on Exchange St. As many of you knew the business housed in the building for the past four decades is Ray & Dick's Bakery run by the Auger family. Among those correctly naming Ray & Dick's Bakery were Harriette Pabon, Jon Greenou, Regina Feil, Don Gordon, Donald Fiske, Guy Bonina Doug Hashey Karen Jackson and Maurice Panagian who also said it also housed Everybody's Market run by the Hill Family.

Frank Krzcuik noted other businesses in the building were BerMac Sea Food Fish Market; Everybody's Market; Dan-Dee donuts; and the entrance to Western Union.

Dwight Watson added the building next door used to house his grandfather's funeral business, Walter W. Watson, Undertaker.

With over four generations of experience as baker’s, Ray & Dick's Bakery is famous for providing it's customers with a mouth-watering spread of anything from Muffins and Rum Cakes to Tortellini soup and Foccacia sandwiches.

Forty-two years ago, after working together and separately at different bakeries, brothers Dick and Ray Auger decided to open their own business, Ray & Dick's Bakery located in downtown Milford. In the late eighties, Dick bought out his brother’s share of the business but, kept the name Ray & Dick's Bakery.

While growing up, three boys Mark, Kevin, and Louie spent a substantial amount of time working at the bakery. “Most days we would come in before and after school to help out. I’ve had experience working in the bakery for over thirty years" says Mark Auger.

With the passing of their father and mother, the three Auger boys now run the bakery located at 20 Exchange St., Milford. Each morning Mark, Kevin, and Louie arrive at the bakery at 1:30 A.M. to prepare the fresh food for the upcoming day. This includes everything from French and Italian bread, Danish, Doughnuts, Cannolis, Sandwiches, and Coffee Cake.

At approximately 5 a.m., the wholesale orders depart on a truck to various locations in the area including Oliva's Market, the Milford-Regional Hospital, and Purchase Street Market.

“As things are going out the back door, people are starting to come in through the front door" says Auger.

Ray & Dick's Bakery is unlike other bakeries because its food is made from recipes that have been passed down through generations. “Our food is homemade, fresh, and it's consistent" says Auger.

Fall Exterior Painting tips

Whether your house is newly constructed or purchased from a previous owner, painting its exterior is the first step toward making it your home. An easy and cost-effective way to ensure a warm look and feel, painting can also rejuvenate your home with your own individual design statement.

Once the primer coat has dried and all your preparations are complete, make sure you have enough paint of the right color consistency to complete an entire section.

Step 1- Mix

Mix your paint thoroughly and continue to stir it before and during use.

Step 2 - Load Your Brush with Paint

To load your brush, immerse the first third of the bristles into the paint and tap it lightly against the inside of the can. Try not to drag the bristles across the lip of the can, as this will remove too much paint.

Step 3 - Use Long, Smooth Strokes

When you apply paint, use long, smooth strokes with your brush. On clapboard surfaces, if paint gathers along the horizontal edge, it has been applied too heavily or not brushed out enough.

Remember that for a well-spread even coat, you should brush oil-based house paints back and forth several times.

Latex paints, however, require less brushing. Because they dry out quickly, excessive brushing can cut deep brush marks into the paint film. When you use latex paints, apply the paint generously with one or two back strokes and then leave it to dry.

Step 4- Using a Roller

Applying paint with a roller works well with porous surfaces like masonry and stucco. Ideal for flat surfaces, rollers will not fit into inside corners, and will often deposit too much paint on the edges of outer corners.

To use a paint roller, dip your roller in the paint tray, rolling it back and forth to remove any excess paint. If it drips when you pick it up, it is overloaded.

Use long, even strokes, and roll in different directions to coat the entire surface. Finish painting with strokes in one direction.

Step 5- Finish with the Trim

Trim should be the last area you paint. Begin by coating your window sash and door paneling first, and then paint the window frame, sills and door trim.

If paint gets on the window's putty line, it will serve to protect the puttied surface from water. To create a clean edge, scrape off any excess paint with a razor blade.

If shutters can be removed, paint them separately and replace them when the rest of the job is finished.
